John 1:6-9
New Living Translation (NLT)
6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
Thought for the Day
In the time of Christ there was no radio, television, or internet to announce the visit of a dignitary, so it was customary to send someone ahead of time to announce their impending visit. The Jews did not understand at the time that John the Baptist was the "Elijah" prophesied centuries before in Malachi 4:5. John the Baptist not only "prepared the way" for the Light of the World, but spent his entire life (and death) in obedient service to God, going before, even baptizing Jesus Christ in preparation for the fulfillment of the ultimate prophesy to save us from ourselves.
God had a specific purpose for the life of John the Baptist as a witness for Christ. What is God's purpose for your life?
